Open-Trench Construction on Boyette Road Begins this Summer

Construction on the South Hillsborough Pipeline is moving forward and will begin on Boyette Road in early June. Work will start at McMullen Road and will proceed eastward to Deepbrook Drive.

During this time, crews will be installing a portion of the pipeline by open-trench construction in the westbound lanes of Boyette Road. The westbound lanes of Boyette Road will be closed from McMullen Road to Bell Shoals Road, and one lane of traffic in each direction will be open in the eastbound lanes. Traffic along Boyette Road will remain open at all times, but residents should expect delays.

More details on the upcoming work will be shared via email, and we encourage residents to sign up for email alerts at SouthHillsboroughPipeline.com/contact. Tampa Bay Water will also post information on Nextdoor, Facebook and the project website: SouthHillsboroughPipeline.com. To learn more about open-trench construction, click here.

Tampa Bay Water’s contractor has scheduled this open-trench construction work for the summer to minimize school-related traffic impacts. However, pipeline installation in this area stretches about 5 miles from McMullen Road to east of Fishhawk Ridge Road, so construction will continue for approximately 12-16 months after it begins You can expect to see these activities in the coming months (not necessarily in this order):

  • Tunnel underneath Little Fishhawk Creek
  • A tunnel under Bell Creek and Bell Shoals Road from the Myron and Helen Gibbons Nature Preserve to just east of Bell Shoals Road
  • Open-trench construction along Fishhawk Boulevard
  • A tunnel under Fishhawk Boulevard
Why is the pipeline necessary?

Tampa Bay Water is building the South Hillsborough Pipeline to meet the growing water needs of Hillsborough County. The new pipeline will be up to five feet in diameter. Once completed, it will carry up to an additional 65 million gallons per day (mgd) of water from the Tampa Bay Regional Surface Water Treatment Plant in Brandon to Hillsborough County’s Lithia Water Treatment Plant and a new water treatment plant in the Balm area.

Once-per-week watering restrictions

On Mar 24, The Southwest Florida Water Management District Governing Board voted to declare a Modified Phase 3 “Extreme” Water Shortage due to dry conditions across the region, which requires all residents in Hillsborough County, including those on private wells, to follow one-day-per-week watering restrictions, with reduced watering hours. The restrictions are in effect from Apr 3, 2026, through July 1, 2026.

The new restrictions also limit pressure washing and fountain use.
